Learners Shine at High Sheriff of Devon’s Declaration Ceremony
On Friday, March 28th, learners from our Arts and Catering departments had the honour of contributing to the *Declaration Ceremony of the High Sheriff of Devon, Caroline Harlow, held at Exeter Cathedral.
The theme of the ceremony, ‘Gambling’, focused on raising awareness of the social and personal impact this issue can have—making it a meaningful platform for our learners to engage with real-world themes through creative expression and skill.
Our Arts learners designed and built a striking ‘wicker centrepiece’, decorated with handcrafted origami playing cards. This stunning display reflected both artistic skill and a deeper understanding of the theme—offering guests a powerful visual message.
Meanwhile, learners from our Catering programme—led by tutor Darren—prepared an tasty range of fresh, handmade canapés for the guests. Their professionalism, presentation, and attention to detail impressed everyone.
Both departments received high praise, with a personal handwritten thank-you from Caroline Harlow, the High Sheriff of Devon—an encouraging and well-deserved recognition of their talent and dedication.
Opportunities like this demonstrate how education in custody can empower learners with practical skills, confidence, and a sense of pride in their achievements. Not only did our learners contribute to a high-profile civic event—they did it with creativity, teamwork, and professionalism that reflect their personal growth and potential for the future.
We are incredibly proud of everyone involved.
